BLEEDS
What is a bleed? It's when the background image or color goes to the edge of the paper. For proper printing and cutting, the image or color should exceed .125" beyond the edge on each side of the finished page size. When formatting, please
- Include a .125" bleed on all sides.
- Margins should be no less than .25".
- Export your file with bleeds and crop marks.

Images are representative of how your finished job will look. Sizes and margins are not exact.
Booklets with Bleeds
If your booklet contains bleeds, export with bleeds, but DO NOT export with crop marks. When crop marks are included, the result is a white spine and gutters throughout. (For a better understanding, Print Services has a printed sample for review.)
When using Canva, the only bleed export option available is with crop marks. An easy work around is to
- Make your document size .25" bigger than the final size. Example: Individual page sizes for a folded 8.5 x 11 booklet should be set to 8.75 x 11.25.
- Margins should be at a minimum .375". This is to compensate for the extra .25" you added to your document size. In essence you are building in the .125" bleed needed on all sides (.125 on the left + .125 on the right + your 8.5 document width = 8.75).
- Export your document without bleeds and crop marks.
- Side note: Don't forget to ensure your booklet page count is evenly divisible by four (i.e., 4, 8, 12, 16, etc.).
